Connection to Purpose: Andrea’s Advocacy

“Advocacy” is more than a value at Clarvida: It’s an action that’s crucial to the individuals and communities we serve, and it has the power to create meaningful change.

Our Supported Housing Program secures stable housing for disabled, elderly, and high-needs clients so that they may regain independence. In April, Andrea Kilgore, a Family & Community Services Program Manager in Washington State, was attempting to place a client in an eligible apartment complex, but was repeatedly met with unjust denials by the landlord.

Faced with systemic obstacles that have dissuaded many from seeking justice, Andrea bravely stood as the voice for her client – and many others – who were being discriminated against by this apartment complex. She contacted her legislative representative after local justice projects were unable to help, and thanks to Andrea’s persistence, the Washington State Office of the Attorney General opened an investigation.

Last week, Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a civil rights lawsuit against the apartment complex for illegal housing discrimination against applicants with disabilities. In the Office’s official press release, Clarvida was named as the agency that uncovered the issue and we were commended for our work. If Attorney General Ferguson’s office succeeds in this case, the entire state of Washington will be positively impacted. It will make housing more accessible for all and protect those who are striving to contribute to their communities.

Andrea’s heroic act of advocacy goes beyond that value alone – it also exemplifies resilience, compassion, and accountability. Her perseverance and determination in this challenging situation are a testament to her integrity.

Andrea, thank you for championing for your client and representing Clarvida in your activism. We celebrate your efforts and are so incredibly proud of you!
